We are very pleased that you are considering donating to Hope Haven. We have lost many of our “faithful donors” due to hurricane Katrina so every donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.
DONATIONS TO OUR SHELTER OPERATION:
Donations to our shelter operations will be used to pay for the operation of our two shelter homes. The funds pay for the utilities and upkeep of the homes, food for the children, clothing, toys, personal items school supplies, entertainment and trips…for all the things that the traditional family pays for. We also pay our full time live in house parents a wage…as taking care of the children is their full time job. Some of the funds pay for the insurance we have to have…for our administrative operations and for the salaries of our Director and the one part time administrative person we employ. And your donations help pay for medical, dental, psychological and vision services for the children who stay with us that is not covered by MEDICAID. Last year our administrative and fundraising expenses made up 6.2% of our total expenditures so you can see…..we try very hard to spend your donations wisely.
DONATIONS TO OUR HELPING HANDS FUND:
We established our helping hands fund in the wake of Katrina. We have always provided in kind support and small amounts of money to needy families in the community but we did soon a random, as needed basis. After Katrina, we found the need to formalize our efforts in this area, so we started the Helping Hands Fund. We pledged that every cent donated to this fund would be given out to those in need. Since Katrina, we have distributed over a 1,000 pieces of new furniture, thousands of toys, clothing and household supplies, over $50,000 in Wal Mart gift cards and almost $50,000 in direct financial help to families who needed assistance with overdue utility bills, rent, deposits, children's needs and more. If you wish to donate specifically to this fund please indicate that your donation is for the Helping Hands fund by writing HH somewhere on your correspondence. If you are using PayPal to donate…include the initials HH somewhere on your name line or address line so we know where to put your donation.

Volunteering
Our goal is to offer the children who live in our home as normal a home environment as any child would have in any home.
Many foster children are very embarrassed to have been taken from their caregivers and do not want it to be known that they are in foster care. Due to this fact, as well as for child safety reasons, we are very cautious about the types of volunteering we use at Hope Haven. When we do utilize volunteers, it is generally for home maintenance, landscaping or construction type purposes – not direct work with the children - and they are usually from an established group, such as the Garden Club, Americorps or Alternative Break. We welcome church groups, school groups, civic organizations or business groups who are interested in supporting the children through specific activities. Examples of things groups have done in the past have been, Christmas parties, Easter egg hunts, arts and crafts days, etc. We are always looking for retired or current school teachers who will tutor our children in a supervised setting at our house. If you think you may have a special skill to offer or have a group that may be interested in volunteering or visiting…please call us!
