COASTCON DOES IT AGAIN!
COASTCON is an annual celebration of science, science fiction and fantasy and for the last ten years the organizers of this event have chosen Hope Haven as their charity. This year, the event raised $2,500 which will be used for general operating expenses. Mike Reader, the chief weather forecaster at WLOX TV, again served as the auctioneer for the charity auction and we really appreciate his efforts on our behalf.
In addition to dressing up in costumes, which is what the general public sees on TV...COASTCON involves many different events. There are panel discussions on books, movies and TV shows which usually includes an author or actor from the show. They also host daylong and weekend table top games that faithfully recreate historical battles using minitures and information about the actual battles. Vendors that sell a wide variety of merchandise are present and a wide variety of origonal artwork is on display and for sale.
All in all, COASTCON is an event that is very family orientated and FUN!!!! It attracts the casual individual that likes Starwars or Star Trek and it attracts the more serious minded who realize that the science fiction and fantasy of today....may well become the realities of tomorrow. We thank all of the great folks who work so hard at COASTCON to put this great event on every year and we so appreciate their continued support of us. You can learn more about COASTCON by visiting their website Just type in COASTCON in your web browser....and away you go!!!!!
The eighth annual softball tournament has been set for Sunday 2 November! This event started out as a grudge match between two bars…and over the years it has grown into one of the major fundraisers for us. What makes this event even more special is that it is put on buy local citizens who take the time out of their own busy lives.
We are now accepting donations of donations for the auction for this event. It can be an item or it may be a service such as landscaping, or termite treatment or a car wash. Call us at 228 466 6395.
FLYING HIGH WITH THE U.S. AIRFORCE

STATE SETTLES LAWSUIT WITH CHIDREN'S RIGHTS ORGANIZATION
Children's Rights, a child advocacy organization out of New York , has recently settled a vital lawsuit against the Mississippi Department of Human Services. To read the full terms of the settlement you can go to the Ms. Government website and following the links to the court settlement. The important thing is that the State has admitted that the Department of Human Services, Children and Family Services Department has not carried out it's mission for many years and has not provided the children in this State with the protection and services they deserve and need.
We have worked with DHS social workers every day for 13 years. We have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. We hope this lawsuit will bring forth a better system for the children in this State. We will continue to do everything in our power to make that happen.
Hurricane recovery slows as funds dwindle
Grass-roots fund seeks national support to `Finish the Job' of rebuilding in Katrina-damaged Mississippi
GULFPORT, MS—A newly formed non-profit, Finish the Job, is seeking
financial support from private and corporate donors nationwide in a grass-roots attempt to place all of Mississippi's Katrina survivors in safe, secure homes of their own.
Fostered by area long term recovery organizations, Finish the Job seeks to generate a new funding resource for Mississippians who may otherwise be left without help as donated funds from national agencies begin to run low. Tens of thousands of families still need help as they
continue living in cramped travel trailers or damaged structures while the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaches.
"This is a way we can help our neighbors, even if some sources of
funding are running out,"said Michelle Wilson, executive director of Rebuild Jackson County.
Finish the Job was established as a fund of the Gulf Coast CommunityFoundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. United Way, many faith-based agencies and individuals from several national relief organizations are also supporting the effort.
Asking every American to give $1 is Finish the Job's simple approach
to raising the millions necessary to continue the recovery effort. Rebuilding from a storm of Katrina's magnitude is predicted to take at least five years. Both home owners and renters will be eligible for Finish the Job assistance.
The grass-roots fund raising effort is drawing enthusiastic support
from volunteers, representing agencies from the Mississippi coast to the state capital, who are giving their talents and time to planning the project. Finish the Job fund will be promoted nationwide.
